The Sessions is a movie about the real life story of my work with poet Mark O'Brien, based also on an article by Mark in the May 1990 issue of The Sun Magazine, titled On Seeing A Sex Surrogate, and Mark's book, How I Became A Human Being. Mark's therapist contacted me to ask if I would work with a 36 year-old man who had polio as a child and had spent the last 30 years in an iron lung. My first thought was "How am I gonna get in there with him?" but with a portable breathing machine I was able to work with him outside of the lung for six 2-hour sessions. The movie follows Mark's quest to discover his sexuality.
